Tough Love – A Loving Solution for Families in Crisis
Tough Love offers a practical and compassionate solution for families torn apart by unacceptable behaviour such as substance abuse, alcohol misuse, or verbal and physical violence. With these welcoming words, countless newcomers have joined TOUGHLOVE® groups worldwide. Therefore, when your family is in crisis and you don’t know where to turn, Tough Love provides effective and practical support.
How Tough Love Support Groups Work
Your first Tough Love support group meeting may feel daunting. However, most people quickly feel relieved to discover the group consists of individuals just like them. These members either face or have faced similar challenges. As a result, newcomers often experience immediate comfort and a sense of belonging after their first meeting. In addition, the group’s supportive atmosphere encourages families to share openly and learn practical steps for change.
Tough Love Groups in South Africa
TOUGHLOVE® began in South Africa in 1988 with a single group. Since then, it has expanded to twenty-one groups nationwide. These groups operate as self-help, family-support networks for anyone struggling with a loved one’s disruptive behaviour. They help families recover from the devastating effects of substance abuse, addiction, and other unacceptable actions.
Family members who practise the Tough Love principles run each group, not professionals. Therefore, families gain authentic guidance from people who truly understand their struggles. In turn, this peer-driven model offers relatable, real-world advice.
